Rakeyia Scott, the wife of Keith L. Scott, has released personal footage of the police shooting that left her husband dead this week. The family has also refuted multiple claims from the Charlotte police, stating Scott’s hands were by his side as he slowly walked backward.
The New York Times obtained the video through the family’s attorney Justin Bamberg, on Friday (Sept. 23). In the nearly 2 minute video, the shooting isn’t seen, but pleas are heard from Scott to her husband as Charlotte-Mecklenburg County police Officer Brentley Vinson continuously tells him to drop a weapon. “He doesn’t have a gun,” Scott is heard saying. “He has a T.B.I. (Traumatic Brain Injury).”
Police Chief Kerr Putney tells NBC News that video doesn’t show “absolute definitive, visual evidence” that Scott didn’t have a weapon. Since the shooting on Tuesday (Sept. 20), the family had said Scott was reading a book while waiting for his son to be dropped off from school when he was approached by police. Putney also told reporters it was “obvious” that Scott was wielding a weapon during the encounter. “[The video] supports what we’ve heard and the version of the truth that we gave about the circumstances,” he said. “If there’s an encounter [and] you go down and the weapon is right there, it’s kind of obvious a weapon was involved, even though I didn’t visually see it from my angle.”

MSNBC’s Joy-Ann Reid and others have questioned the presence of a gun at the scene. Scott’s video at 1:43 and 1:44 shows a black object flicker from Officer Vinson and hit the ground. Reporter Cal Perry also showed a slower version of the video on the network, proposing the idea.
